Tikal (City of Tongues) was the largest settlement of the Mayan empire. It was truly amazing to walk in the footsteps of these ancient inhabitants that thrived in Mayan's Classical period from 200-900AD. The most iconic structure, the Jaguar Temple, was constructed around 732AD and serves as a tomb for historic ruler Jasaw Chan K'wiil. The city was discovered by scientists in 1848 and was restored between 1950-60. I toured this city with my Army friend Fernandez, who is currently stationed in El Salvador. We served together in Ramadi, Iraq and are both nerds when it comes to ancient history.
